about

In 2006 we had our second full-length album ready to go. We spent most of 2005 and the first half of 2006 recording and mixing it on a budget of $0, which is why it took so long. When you’re recording DIY, things end up taking much longer than if you’re paying for it. Partly because you’re not worried about how much the time costs so you do everything at a more leisurely pace. Partly because I obsess over everything when I’m mixing and I never think the songs are ready to put them out in the world. But mostly because we didn’t have a studio to record in, so we had to record everything in pieces wherever and whenever we wouldn’t bug the people who lived in the places where we did it. We ended up recording all the drums in my parent’s basement, and the guitar, bass, and vocals in my tiny Maplewood apartment over the course of a bunch of afternoons when my neighbor was at work. We mixed it on an 8 track Tascam digital studio with no effects processors and one compressor. The end result is a sound we like to think of as charmingly low-fi.

We called it “No Better”. Yes, there was a song with the same name on it, but the main reason for the name was because our first album was called “Wrong Move” and we thought it was a funny way to follow that up. Ha. Ha.

Because we’re slow at everything, we never got around to making artwork or pressing copies of it before Bryan quit the band in November, 2006 starting the first of our many patented multi-year hiatuses. We gave a few copies to close friends and family but not much beyond that. Some of the songs, like Sluzer, Working Class Zero, and Rainbows and Bunny Rabbits have lived on and become staples of our live shows. We re-recorded No Better, Keeping Up With The Joneses, and One Foot in the Grave on “Like a Fox” in 2016, but by the time Rikki joined the band in 2008, the lighter stuff on the album didn’t really fit what we were trying to do as a band anymore and we were writing a lot of new stuff so we just kinda stopped playing most of the songs.

Speaking of all the lighter songs on this one, those are all mine. I was listening to a lot of The Cure back then. That’s not a Wedding Singer reference, that’s seriously what happened. Lucky for us, Greg was listening to a lot of Andrew W.K. at the same time so he wrote a bunch of super rockin’ stuff that balanced the album out.

All in all, we think it’s a pretty solid collection of songs and we probably should have put it out long before now. But hey, better late than never, right? We hope you like it.
